We really enjoyed our time at Anchorage Aweight just as the USVI opened up after the covid lock-downs. We love the Coral Bay side of the island, and Anchorage Aweight did not disappoint. it is located about half way up a steep hill just above coral bay. (definitely would recommend a 4-wheel jeep rental for getting up this hill, as well as any other on the island. All can be steep) The view of the boats anchored in the bay, the sound of the local donkeys and roosters are fun to enjoy.
The villa is in great condition, and perfect for 2 couples. There is also an owners home, unattached, just adjacent to the rental villa. Very nice pool that we used several times, but the bay view from the pool is blocked by a palm bush. It would be nice to have a more unobstructed view, but still enjoyable.
As the island is still recovering from Hurricane Irma in 2017, the vegetation is returning, but many destroyed home and local structures exist. Below the home is a school that has been destroyed and not rebuild, and a few restaurants that have just now begun service again. Indigo Bar and Grill & Skinny Legs are both at the bottom of the hill, and both very tasty.
The only negative I found was the local fire station is at the bottom of the hill. Evidently it has been newly rebuilt and is now occupied and servicing the community again, which I am sure is a welcome addition. The downside is that the station leaves it glaring florescent lights on in its 2 big station bays all night. This is not an issue except when you are sitting on the veranda overlooking the bay at night and the station lights can be directly seen down the hill. It certainly takes away from the gorgeous nighttime views of the boats in the bay and the moonlight/star view. They also tested their truck sirens at 8am on a Tues.
It certainly would not deter me from renting this villa again, we were just surprised by it. I did go down and talked with one of the EMS staff about the glare, and one evening we noticed they had turned off the larger bay lights, and it made the evening bay viewing much better...and then they have been on every other evening. :-(
The Owners Patricia and Scott have been incredibly attentive to our needs from booking to departure. Thank you for making our 30th Anniversary trip a wonderful success.
We (two couples) stayed at Anchorage Aweigh for a week. It was perfect - very relaxing, nice views over the harbor, wonderful outdoor spaces. The two full master suites, each with a king bed and outdoor shower (awesome!) are perfect for two couples - plenty of privacy, including outdoor spaces attached to each master. Wonderful common areas to enjoy each others company as well - wrap around porch with wonderful breezes and views. Annette (property manager) was very responsive and helpful. Coral Bay is the quiet side of the island but still close to anything you want to do (beaches, restaurants, trails). Cruz Bay is also only 20 minutes drive away. Would definitely recommend Anchorage Aweigh!
We loved Anchorage Aweigh! This was our 24th year in St. John. In that time, we have rented 5 different houses (one of which we returned to for 18 years). We were supposed to go to St. John for Christmas, 2018 but the house we had rented was severely damaged in the hurricanes. We postponed our trip and decided to return when the island was well into recovery in late February-early March. We were so glad we did! My husband, 26-year-old daughter, and I just returned from two weeks at Anchorage Aweigh which, hands down, is the best house we have rented on St. John (and anywhere). The owners, Scott and Patty have agonized over every detail and it shows. The house has a fabulous view over Coral Bay which, from the expansive deck and the living areas, allows you to take in the village, Caribbean-blue bay, and hills beyond. During our visit, we were lucky to see the moon’s glow wash the bay—an unforgettable sight. At night, the stars and lights twinkle and you can hear the faint hum of people enjoying meals and music in the village below. If you want perfect silence, all is dead quiet by 9pm. The décor is comfortable, functional, and attractive. Every surface, the floors and decks, counters, furniture, and even the artisanal stone walls in the outdoor shower feel wonderful to the touch. The beds are incredibly comfortable, sporting the perfect balance of firm and cozy. The furnishings, bed linens, and towels are high quality. The kitchen is well equipped for cocktails and dinners on the porch or living area and there is an excellent gas grill outside. Beach towels, chairs, and a cooler are supplied. The house has thick concrete walls (which is probably why it did so well in the hurricane) that, along with the ceiling fans and ac in the bedrooms, keep the house cool and quiet. We love Coral Bay because it is a friendly, sleepy, funky village that lacks the commercialism overtaking so much of the Caribbean. It has plenty of restaurants and shops and is, in our opinion, the best location for visiting both the north and south shore beaches and trails. Make sure and rent a car with 4-wheel drive to fully take advantage of what the island offers. Anchorage Aweigh is a house that makes you want to linger. We stayed longer in the mornings, drinking coffee on the porch and returned early to the spectacular pool in the late afternoons. We enjoyed getting to know Scott and Patty. They are wonderful owners who will be as present as you want. It was very convenient having them nearby when we accidently turned off the gas to the stove. Scott ran over immediately and showed us what happened! It is a great time to visit St. John. The island is recovering and the spirit is strong. People are more welcoming and friendlier than ever before and we were often thanked in restaurants and shops for returning to support the island. Although many houses and hotels have suffered damage and the foliage is much diminished, the beaches are more gorgeous than ever (and less crowded!) and the trails are open with even more spectacular views. Kudos to Scott and Patty for creating Anchorage Aweigh, the perfect place to enjoy this piece of paradise. We have already booked our return trip.
Ok so the beautiful photos of this place are the real deal. The location is absolutely beautiful and every day that we were here we enjoyed every bit of what this island and house had to offer. It certainly didn't disappoint. We won't talk about the shared cab ride from the St Thomas airport to the ferry (sheer terror courtesy of our stunt driver) but with Steve's assistance (covering for owners while they were away) we accomplished this and made it to the jeep rental (aqua blue and also great). Steve was awesome. He guided us to a grocery store nearby then to the house. It really did help having him do this as we needed a guide to get our feet on the ground with the driving situation. We did learn that we preferred to back up the drive to the house such that it made for an easier way out. We also discovered that throwing th jeep into 4 low made for the easiest time navigating this action (this is no joke). The house was beautiful and many prior residents had left plenty of bug spray, sun screen and few food items. Likewise we left some of our items when we left to help out the next group coming in. Bug spray is your friend, I will repeat, bug spray is your friend. The bed rooms are very comfy and the AC cools down rapidly at night. The common area did get hot and we did struggle with this a bit and never quite acclimated to it. This was really our only struggle and likely one that most couples wouldn't have an issue with as our Midwest blood must be a bit thick. Typically we were leaving fairly early in the morning for our travels around the island and returning in the mid afternoon. This time proved to be an excellent opportunity to enjoy their beautiful pool with unreal view. This was our afternoon spot each day enjoying a cold drink, salt water pool and the occasional humming bird visit. At the same time we would be serenaded by the roosters in the valley along with the free range sheep and occasional donkey. If you enjoy movie time at night, the owners have outdone themselves on recording plus there are tons of books. Honestly, after a full day of snorkeling, hiking and pool time, we were ready for food then bed so movie time didn't materialize. I mean seriously, this is paradise, enjoy it while you've got it! Thank You Ancorage Aweigh for helping to make this trip so memorable.
Anchorage Aweigh turned out to be a wonderful place to stay for our group of four (two couples).
What we loved:
Dual master bedrooms on separate floors
Outdoor showers (there are none inside)
Wonderful salt water pool - so refreshing after a day at the beach and the pool has views too!
Lots of balcony/patio space on both floors
Great location to some wonderful beach and snorkel spots that are not swamped with tour buses. But not an unreasonable distance from the popular spots.
Large gas grill
Plenty of seating for four and even more outside.
The kitchen was really well stocked. I don't think we ran across anything we didn't have and we cooked every day.
What we didn't love:
Sadly the mosquito population was crazy when we were there. We had lots of bug spray but they still loved snacking on us. Apparently this is not the norm there, but it kept us from enjoying the outside as much as we would have liked.
What would make it better:
Would love to see a few games, cards, and dice added to the unit. There were lots of movies, but we would have enjoyed some games for the evenings. It gets dark early and we don't eat out much.
Tips - You might want to check out the unit before you shop. There were many condiments (butter, jams, mayo, mustard etc) that people had left. Might save a dime or two.
We enjoyed conversation with Scott and Patricia, they were always willing to answer questions but they were very conscientious about giving us space. We told them to come chat anytime so we enjoyed some chats by the pool.
I felt the photos very accurately represented the property and appreciated that there were no surprised. The living room was not air conditioned, which I had missed, but the bedrooms were. It got a little warm a couple times but nothing we couldn't manage.
This place is so awesome we almost don't want to share. But Scott and Patricia are wonderful and have created an oasis in paradise.
We love Coral Bay and we love Anchorage Aweigh. The view from the porch is perfect. We spent mornings drinking coffee and evenings drinking wine overlooking Coral Bay and all the boats. The view from the pool is unparalleled- you are on the edge of the world.
Anchorage Aweigh is perfect in it's accommodation and incredible privacy. You don't realize Scott and Patricia are right next door- but they are there if you need them. You only see their house via the pool- but wouldn't know they are there.
The king size bed is extremely comfortable and it's a full bath with a great stone and shell outdoor shower that is wonderful!! Amazing kitchen (although we didn't cook)- gas stove, dishwasher what more could you ask for. Comfortable couches and internet, cooler, beach chairs, towels, you don't want for anything. The fridge even makes ice.
Really cool part is while you have everything- it's almost off the grid.
We can't wait to return. Wonderful!!!
What can I add to everything that has already been said about Scott, Patricia, and Anchorage Aweigh? I turned 50 in December and wanted to do something memorable.... I researched so many countries, tours, and trips. I found AA on trip advisor, saved it as a favorite and compared everything to it going forward in my research. Not one place was as perfect a fit as AA, it was everything I wanted my trip to be!!! Scott responded quickly to my inquiries and booking request. The house was exactly what you see in the pictures-the only thing I didn't realize was the shower in the master bathroom is outside. There wasn't a shower inside as well. With how wonderful it was showering outside every day, I quickly realized there was no need for an indoor shower!! Coral bay was beautiful, quiet and relaxing. The roads were scary as hell, lol!!! I always drive the rental car on vacation-not this time!!! Slow and steady wins the race and you (almost!) get used to driving on the roads!!! The restaurant below the house was our favorite... fish tacos and fried sweet plaintains.... different tacos every day.... I'm craving them now!!! I know this is sad, but I couldn't wait to go to bed every night so that morning would come quicker and I could see that beautiful vista every day. Scott and Patricia met us at the pier with the rental car representative. It was a wonderful experience from A to Z. Affordable, friendly, beautiful. Go.... Go! Now! Thank you Scott and Patricia for my most unforgettable birthday!
Oh! And mailing our charger back that we left behind!!!! xo
Anchorage Aweigh was built with love. It is apparent in every detail. From the beautiful open living area/kitchen that is absolutely perfect to make a nice breakfast before heading out to explore the island, to the expansive balcony with a stunning view of Coral Bay and the surrounding hillside. We spent most of our time on the balcony listening to the Coral Bay choir of birds (and donkeys at night) and enjoying the best view in Coral Bay. Scott and Patricia were the most kind and helpful hosts that made this our favorite vacation we have ever had. Scott even helped my boyfriend out with suggestions for a surprise marriage proposal - it was absolutely perfect! Another stand out feature was the outdoor shower made out of gorgeous shells and stone - with enough room for two ;)
This was our 2nd trip to STJ with our teenage children. We highly recommend this villa for anyone wanting to stay in Coral Bay on St John and would definitely return to Anchorage Aweigh. The owners, Scott and Patricia built this villa themselves and live in the villa next door. They took meticulous care in planning and building this amazing villa and it shows in the workmanship and attention to details. The layout provides great privacy, protection from the seasonal winds, and breathtaking views. It has 2 king bedrooms each with their own outdoor showers (oh so relaxing!), fully furnished kitchen, on site laundry, beach towels and chairs, coolers, and a grill if you want to cook outside. The covered patio was perfect for a sunrise breakfast and coffee, listening to the wildlife, and simply relaxing out of the sun and in the light breeze. They also have many books and DVDs to choose from for your entertainment and the pool was a nice place to take a dip after a long day at the beach, hiking or kayaking. St John is truly an amazing place to visit with so much to do and see or if you just want to get away, this villa would provide a peaceful retreat with the comforts of home away from home. The communications and rental transactions were as easy as can be. Scott also offered advise on rental Jeep places, things to do, and some off the beaten path activities. Well done Scott and Patricia! Thank you for renting to us.
Anchorage Aweigh is a gem. Attention has been given to every detail. A smile and a calm comes over you the minute you walk in the door. Owners were off island at the time, but left Jane ( the caretaker) to see to our needs. What a lovely girl! Thank you for allowing us to share "a piece of paradise" with you.
Anchors Aweigh is Truly a hidden treasure. You can not put into words the true beauty of the views that you see. Absolutely breathtaking. The villa was magnificent! Private Outside showers - Genius idea! The morning Sunrise took my breath away. Total Zen! A must to be had by all!
Anchorage Aweigh took my breath away. Truly. The pictures were beautiful, but when I walked in the door I was captivated. To experience this villa and the views from such a beautiful orientation will rank this as a top vacation in my lifetime. I WILL be back! Every inch had a stunning view of Coral Bay. From the smiley face in the bay to the rainbow over the Moravian Church, I knew I was some place special.
If cleanliness is next to godliness, then this is another reason to call this place heavenly. I felt like the first visitor ever. The villa is beautifully appointed and well supplied. The bed was amazingly comfortable and the view at night from the bedroom was so pretty. The outdoor shower was just plain sexy!
Patty and Scott, our hosts, we're so friendly and helpful. The knew about local restaurants, the BEST beaches, hikes, and beautiful snorkeling locations.
Anchorage Aweigh is a lovely site that is beautifully kept and oh-so-comfortable. Scott and Patricia make every effort to provide a private, luxurious getaway for their guests with a sweeping views from the breezy screened deck, sparkling pool, and lovely furnishings to ensure a restful visit. We toured St. John with John and Patricia's suggestions, which were spot-on. We saw areas of the island that were only known to locals, and enjoyed an experience that was so much more than the tourist getaway. The beaches were spectacular, and our dinners out were delightful. Coral Bay is a bit off the beaten track, though likely to develop over the next years since most of St. John is a national park, leaving only Coral Bay and Cruz Bay for private development. You can experience both upscale and local elements in Coral Bay, which is a mix that we treasure. The house is nothing short of spectacular, with all the comforts of a luxury resort, but yours alone! John even repaired our flat tire when we arrived. Highly recommended.
We stayed at Anchorage Aweigh, a surprise gift for my upcoming birthday. The hillside views are amazing, and the location lends itself to strong breezes day and night, which make the patios a wonderful place to be. The pool is a terrific start and end to each day, and the owners are wise enough to even have a shaded corner of the pool for the days that you take in too much sun. The house was designed and built superbly, which means when you shut the doors and windows at night and turn on the AC, you will not hear a peep from outside. A morning cup of coffee on the ledge of the downstairs outdoor shower is truly a 'bucket list' experience.
As they will recommend, you really want a capable 4x4 to both get to and from the property and explore this less populated side of the island - the journey out to the Lameshur beaches almost require it. You will also want to check the VINow website for when the cruise ships arise (usually Tuesdays and Thursdays) , and you will want to avoid Cruz bay and the 2 or 3 beaches they have excursions to (Trunk, Cinnamon, etc) - don't worry, there are many better beaches much closer to the cottage!
If money is no object you can find interesting places for all 3 meals, but food and dining is extremely expensive on the island, so we tried to eat breakfast in and take sandwiches out to the beaches for lunch, which let us splurge for dinners. Truth be told, if you keep it simple with Skinny Legs burgers and takeout pizza from Indigo Grill, you probably wont be eating too much cheaper if you cook at the villa. Dry goods seemed to be more expensive, so I would travel with cereal, crackers, nachos, coffee etc if you have room in the bags. Dehydrated fruits would also be good, as the cost of fruit and veggies on the island are steep.
The real treat for us were the owners - kind and knowledgeable, helpful but not overbearing, available but always respectful of our privacy. They maintain the property very well and their love for the island and the house shows. I couldn't ask for a better vacation location, and we hope to be repeat guests of Scott and Patricia for many years to come.
My wife and I stayed at this fabulous villa the first week in May this year. It was our first trip to St. John and the USVI. Friends had recommended we stay in Coral Bay for a relaxing vacation. It was a great choice! Anchorage Aweigh offers a fantastic view of the harbor and quaint community. It is a short drive to several bars and restaurants where we enjoyed some of our meals. Scott and Patricia are wonderful hosts who know all the best places to explore. Anchorage Aweigh is a great villa in a wonderful location in Coral Bay. Highly recommended.
We stayed at the Anchorage Aweigh cottage in 2012, which was our first VRBO rental on St. John. We loved the cottage and pool…and the villa life it offered. Returned to the property this May (2016) and rented the newer two bedroom villa adjacent to the cottage that the owners now live in. The villa has a delightful view of Coral Bay Harbor and features the things a comfortable villa has…..great bed, clean and well organized kitchen, outdoor shower, indoor staircase to second bedroom and pool area, lots of outdoor living areas etc. ,etc. ,etc. We enjoyed the villa as the VRBO description and pictures accurately depict this very charming rental.
I have been visiting the island for more than 30 years and for the past decade have been part of foursome who annually choose St John for their vacation. Over those years I have traversed all of the lodging options from camping to villas and have discovered that the Coral Bay area of the island is much more suited for our lifestyles and expected vacation experience.
With each yearly visit we have tried out a new villa as we have searched for the perfect spot for the group. This year found us at Anchorage Aweigh and we are happy to say that we have already booked the villa for 2017 as our search for a better option has ended.
The interaction with Scott & Patricia (the villa owners) was outstanding right from the very beginning (almost a year ago). Although we are veterans of the island they were more than willing to help us make plans if needed.
The villa is a gorgeous home overlooking Coral Bay. The attention to detail in the home is awesome. We found the house immaculately clean and well stocked.
The villa offers 2 equal master bedrooms (one on the main floor and one on the lower floor accessible through interior spiral staircase), both en suite with AC. Both bathrooms offers an outdoor showering experience (the lower shower offered a bit less privacy, a bit less hot water, but a much better view) The king size beds were to die for and the overall privacy was outstanding.
The group started each morning with coffee and breakfast on the wrap around porch with one of the best views on the island. Once we could pry ourselves away from the view it was off to the beach and to enjoy the day. Other then breakfast, we did not eat another meal at the villa (packed lunches for the beach & dinner out) so we can't really review the villa for its ability to provide for more cooking.
As veterans we can offer the following:
Roads - you never are quite sure what you might find for road surface to a villa (we have seen pretty much all over the years). The road to the villa was all paved (with some fairly intense switchbacks) which is a definite plus. The driveway, while fairly challenging initially, was easy to navigate once you got the hang of it. Overall grade A
Kitchen Supplies - Again we were fairly limited in our needs but it appeared that there were enough settings/supplies, and the villa had all of your standard appliances in excellent shape and working order . Overall grade A
Beach Supplies - In addition to Beach Towels, AA provided 4 beach chairs and a couple of coolers for the beach. Overall grade. A
Showers/Hot Water - I had read in previous reviews some concern over hot water. Here is our take. There was a time in our lives when cold showers on St John was what you got. While we have no intention of traveling that road again, we do acknowledge that you won't get the kind of hot water you might get at home. Having said that, other then the lower shower hot water I listed above, there appeared to more than adequate hot water. Everyone loved their outdoor shower experience. Overall grade A
Owners - As I mentioned we had great interaction with both Scott & Patrica. I believe they are willing to be as involved, or not, in your visit as your group requires. We required little involvement so they gave us space, while still letting us know if we needed more, just ask. This was our first island visit where the owner/manager was going to be on property so we did go into the stay with a bit of apprehension. The only thing our group struggled with was shared space (pool & laundry) which we eventually worked out on our end and will not be a concern moving forward. In the end, we rarely saw them so any pre trip apprehension, or shared space worries, were unwarranted. - Overall grade A
Least you think this is a paid endorsement there were some items that might take this property from outstanding to perfect. Here are some thoughts that had very little negative impact on us but might make a big positive difference.
* extra set of sheets for each bed so that we could change sheets mid-stream (we were there for 10 nights).
* figure out an extra chair in the inside sitting area. Our group of 4 ended up bringing in a section of the outside sectional for sitting.
* larger TV? So as I mentioned above, everyone has different needs. Kitchen/Dinner supplies not on our list. Hanging around watching a movie at night we do. A larger TV would be great for us older folks:-)
Conclusion - this is an awesome villa with great owners in a little slice of heaven. If you are reading this review and trying to make a decision... run as fast as you can and book this villa (just don't book our dates please).
Really looking forward to March 2017.
Just returned from a week at Anchorage Aweigh, and was thoroughly pleased. The location and view can't be beat if you want to be in Coral Bay. The house is beautiful, well maintained, and supplied with everything needed. Towels and linens were great, refreshing and clean pool. The owners (who are onsite in an adjacent property) were extremely friendly and helpful, and were there if and when we needed them for anything. Would not hesitate to stay here again.
If you want to visit St John, USVI, you should definitely plan on staying at Anchorage Aweigh. The managers and owners, Scott and Patricia, have thought of everything and built a villa that is perfect for any group of friends or family. The views over Coral Bay and the hilly mountainous island are enjoyed morning and night with a comfortable wrap around porch. We loved the well appointed kitchen for evenings when we cooked in or grilled our meal. Linens were lush and the outdoor showers a treat ! Scott and Patricia made sure we were informed about restaurants and beaches on the island, as well as any entertainment. We spent 2 weeks there, loved the ability to do laundry and the casual atmosphere of the island. A great escape and it comes with personal attention that is hard to find.
We recently returned from what can only be described as a perfect vacation experience at Anchorage Aweigh. Scott and Patricia, the friendly owners, have created a gorgeous home overlooking equally gorgeous Coral Bay. The attention to detail in this stunning home is amazing, and is made even more so by the fact that the owners built this home themselves. The house was immaculately clean when we arrived and Scott and Patrica anticipated our every need, from a well stocked kitchen to coolers and beach chairs.
My husband and I were traveling with friends, and the house is perfect for two couples traveling together. There are two equally lovely master bedrooms on separate floors, each with air conditioning comfortable beds with luxury linens (and great pillows!), private bathrooms with fabulous outdoor showers with plenty of luxurious towels. I saw several reviews here stating the lack of hot water for showers. We didn’t experience that at all. Even with all four of us showering after a day at the beach we found hot water was always available.
We spent a lot of time on the wrap around porch, enjoying our breakfast out there before setting off for the day’s adventures, and sitting back with a glass of wine and the lovely views in the late afternoon before going out to dinner at one of Coral Bay’s great restaurants.
We also enjoyed a dip in the saline pool most afternoons after a day at one of the beautiful St. John beaches.
Scott and Patricia were living in the cottage on the property, and were available for a friendly chat and to give advice if we wanted, but also were very thoughtful of our privacy and had we not initiated conversation, we probably wouldn’t have known they were around. Three cheers for perfect VRBO owners! Thank you Scott and Patricia for sharing your home with us. All four of us agreed that we had a perfect stay at Anchorage Aweigh and would highly recommend this beautiful home to anyone.
Lovely villa rental in the quiet part of St John- Coral Bay on the eastern end of the tiny island. 2 couples traveled together. We could not have asked for a better rental. Perched up on Sea Grape Hill, we were minutes from great dining, great bars, a small but pretty well stocked grocery store. The lovely beaches of the north shore including Honeymoon, Maho, Hawksnest, Cinnamon and Trunk were only about 15-20 minutes away by car. But for us, the villa as well as Scott and Patricia was really a wonderful centerpiece to our great visit to the island. Scott and Patricia could not have been kinder, helpful- Scott met us at Courtesy Car Rental in Cruz Bay (the "busy" part of St John) and we followed him back to the villa. They suggested several great places to dine. Answered any questions we had etc etc. The home they have built is stunning- 2 beautifully decorated and comfortable bedrooms on separate levels of the home for privacy, both with outdoor showers (the shower on the lower level overlooks the beautiful harbor of Coral Bay). Soft soft soft towels as beach towels. Wonderful wraparound porches where we spend quite a bit of time taking in the beauty of the area. The kitchen was well stocked. Wit so many great places to dine, we never made a dinner there but had breakfasts and sometimes lunch, dining on the outside porch. The rental was absolutely spotless when we arrived and very well maintained. If/when we return to St John, we would hope to stay at this beautiful property again.
Words cannot capture the magical adventure we experienced while in Coral Bay, St. John! The excitement, the wildlife, the water, the new friends, the food, the ambiance, the hiking, the driving, the snorkeling, the beaches, the sunsets, the kayaking...
The villa was beautiful, clean and comfortable and centrally located to all our needs. We had as much privacy as we chose, while our hosts were available and incredibly generous with guidance and kindness. The showers were awesome, and the bed was very comfortable. So much care had been taken to create an island paradise.
We had all the amenities to cook a few meals and were close enough to run out when we wanted to either grab a casual meal between beaches or go out for a fine dining experience.
We praise God for such a wonderful way to celebrate our 20th anniversary! We would choose to come here again!
We couldn't have asked for a better honeymoon. Scott and Patricia were the perfect hosts and treated us as if we were family. They helped us find our way from the ferry dock to our rental car location and showed us around coral bay. The view is better than any of the pictures and the pool is an amazing plus. We spent our days exploring all the great hiking and snorkeling spots and our evenings dining at the local restaurants. The highlight of the trip was kayaking and snorkeling the mangroves with Scott, Patricia and their friends. Could not have ask for a better week. We will be returning in the near future.
We stayed at this property five years ago for our honeymoon and loved it, we didn't even consider other places in Coral Bay.. Since our last visit the owners had built a new house on the property and it is stunning!
The house had every amenity we could possibly need, the kitchen was very well appointed, and the bed was heavenly! We love the comfort of the entire house and the views from every room were amazing and you can't forget the refreshing pool. The owners were onsite the second week of our visit and we found that they were helpful and loved hearing about our daily adventures as well as offering additional places to visit.
The location of this property is very conveniently located in Coral Bay and very easy to get to. The food in Coral Bay is just as good if not better than the Cruz Bay side of the island with Skinny Legs, Miss Lucy's, Aqua Bistro, The Tourist Trap, and many others offering great food and entertainment.
My wife and I can't say enough about the property and the amazing work that these owners have put into it. We are already planning our next trip and wouldn't think of staying anywhere besides Anchorage Aweigh.
We stayed at the Villa with another couple that were high school classmates. We enjoyed the quiet, comfortable atmosphere the Villa offered. The views of Coral Bay were awesome. We enjoyed the outdoor showers and the spacious decks for relaxing. The owners, Scott and Patty, were very helpful in providing information of the beaches, restaurants etc. in the area. We had a great stay and hope to return in the future. If you are looking to stay at a Villa on St John, this would be the one to choose!
This was a wonderful house. The kitchen had nice appliances and was well-equipped for cooking, ice maker in fridge was a luxury (gotta keep that blender going) and the porch had stunning views of Coral Bay. Loved the pool with the view of the harbor. It was a perfect stay and the property manager, Marc was helpful and friendly. Would absolutely return!!!
This private villa was absolutely perfect! It was private, comfortable, and complete with a whole kitchen, internet, bathrooms, television, wrap around deck, washer and dryer, and beautiful pool. The view from this villa is unbelievable whether looking from the porch swing in the morning, or at the stars from the outside shower at night! It is a quiet location with easy access to great restaurants/happy hours along with snorkeling and hiking. Anchorage Aweigh exceeded all expectations in providing for an absolutely divine tropical vacation. I plan to return here many more times!
My husband and I recently stayed at Anchorage Aweigh. What a great Coral Bay home!! You can tell that the owners put a lot of heart and thought into the home. First off, the drive up Seagrape Hill to AA is not bad at all. There are some turns and hills, but the road is very well paved and wide enough for two cars. We have faced some scary driveways/roads in Coral Bay and this is not one of them. The other great part of the location is that you do not feel "isolated" but have 100% privacy.
The home itself is very new and in great condition. In my opinion, the house was a perfect combination of luxury and Coral Bay casual. The wraparound porch/deck was our favorite part. Also, the king bed in master is very comfortable. We did use the bedroom AC at night.
We feel lucky to have found this great home to rent for our trip. We would stay at Anchorage Aweigh again in a heartbeat.
My husband and I stayed at Anchorage Aweigh from January 30th-February 6th. We loved our time there so much and cannot wait to go back! The location is in quiet coral bay, but the area has many amenities. We much preferred it to Cruz bay! The Villa had everything we needed and was very clean. The pool was great to relax by in The late afternoon after we returned from our daily adventures. The view is beautiful from the pool and outdoor shower. You will definitely need a 4x4 on the island and to get up the drive way! We could have stayed forever, but unfortunately had to come back to reality. Do not
Hesitate to come to this beautiful island and stay at Anchorage Aweigh!!!!
Just returned from a wonderful stay at anchorage aweigh. The house was immaculate and just as described in the listing with spectacular views down into Coral Bay. The outdoor area had such extremely comfortable furniture (dining table too) that we rarely spent a moment inside. We enjoyed the use of the pool, which with it's southern sunny exposure was warm enough for us even in February. The kitchen was well stocked and even had spices, oils, condiments, etc for our use.
The house is located up Seagrape Hill, which is a completely paved road (not all secondary roads are in St. John). It was an easy drive down to Coral Bay where we greatly enjoyed the local restuarants Skinny Legs, Aqua Bistro and especially the Coral Bay Caribbean Oasis (we got delicious and inexpensive take-out from them). We also found the location to be centrally located to all our favorite beaches, whether on the North Shore, East End, or Salt Pond area.
The owners were extremely easy to work with and very prompt at answering all my questions.
Wife and I stayed for 9 days in mid January 2014. Great little place with all the comforts of home. Very convenient to everything in Coral Bay. Short drive to all north shore beaches and bays. Pool was perfect. Living room very small, but with all the outside areas we never would have used it no matter what the size was. We we're very happy with our stay at Anchorage Aweigh. Owners and property manager easily contacted and responsive. There are two units under construction adjacent to the pool but no construction during winter months. The villa is still private for 2 since the other units are unfinished (inside) and vacant.
Hot water is solar only. So we adjusted to afternoon showers after our daily excursions to beaches, etc.

This house was an incredible getaway for us. A second honeymoon after 22 years! Great privacy - beautiful pool - - incredible views fo Coral Bay - easy access to wonderful beaches - national parks - national reefs, etc... A great retreat in a beautiful location. Be sure to check out Skinny Legs for a great burger at the bottom of the hill and Miss Lucy's for great food and an opportunity to dine with domesticated goats and a cat. Great community! Will definitely return to anchorage aweigh if our travels take us back to Usvi! Great hosts from afar.
Anchorage aweigh provided an absolutely perfect place for my husband and I to stay while we were on our honey moon on St. John!
The house was very modern, quaint, and romantic. We loved all of the outdoor space, and the outdoor shower was amazing. The house had everything we needed for cooking, making drinks, and going to the beach (coolers, towels, beach chairs). The air condition in the bedroom was definitely a plus, even though with the windows open upstairs the temperature was perfect.
We loved eating breakfast and drinking coffee out on the deck in the morning, packing lunch and taking a cooler to all of the beautiful beaches in St. John. We went to a new one every day, all within 20 minutes or so from the house. The pool was so nice to have as well, and we loved to either start or end the day having a cocktail and reading in the comfortable chairs there.
Once we became acclimated with the intense hills and driving, all the stress melts away on St. John. Anchorage aweigh was definitely a big part of that, as it is very private and quiet, yet close enough to restaurants in Coral Bay and Cruz Bay. Loves and Lill's Market were within 5 minutes for quick groceries and Star Fish Market in Cruz Bay was only 25 min away. We loved staying in Coral Bay, as it was definitely peaceful with breathtaking views.
We were very happy we brought bug spray though, as the mosquitos were pretty thick--especially after a rain.
We asbsolutely loved our stay and will definitely return to this little piece of Heaven on Earth! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Privacy. Views of Coral Bay. Comfort. Anchorage aweigh had it all, packed into a one BR with a wonderful pool and view of Coral Bay. Kitchen utensils, towels, chairs, grill, deck furniture were all selected with the same care you would for your own home.
Our stay at anchorage aweigh was unreal. The privacy was astounding, and the view was breath-taking. The only thing that threatened our comfort in the villa was the mosquitos, but the villa equips you with an electric flyswatter that takes care of that! The kitchen had everything you could possibly need to cook, but we never made it to that point because Skinny Legs and Donkey Diner down the hill were too tempting! Besides those, there are plenty of restaurant options in Coral Bay. We spent every day at the beach, so it was nice that anchorage aweigh is only 5-10 minutes away from the most beautiful beaches in the world. The air-conditioned bedroom was a lifesaver, too. We slept like babies. Oh, and the pool! So refreshing! The night before our wedding, I stayed in the Westin so we could get ready separately. I can honestly recommend anchorage aweigh over a 4-star resort any day! Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful home!
Anchorage Aweigh was everything that my husband and I could have hoped for on our first anniversary/belated honeymoon trip. The home was beautiful and had ever amenity we could want including local fish guides for our snorkeling adventures and iPod hookup for some relaxing tunes in the evening. Although, we highly recommend watching the goats on the school grounds in the morning, feeding the sugar birds in the afternoon or just listening to the boat and dock bells and music from the restaurants in Coral Bay.
We enjoyed the swimming pool, outdoor shower, porch views and the comfortable bed. They were the perfect retreat after a day spent on the beach, snorkeling or kayaking. The cooler and beach chairs were perfect for hiking to some secluded beaches.
Aqua Bistro Friday night Ponzu tuna appetizer was our very favorite meal. The company at The Tourist Trap along with their lobster rolls were the best lunch break after a morning at Salt Pond Bay. We also found that the atmosphere and burgers at Skinny Legs could not be beat!
There are plenty of fantastic beaches within a short driving distance. We especially loved Salt Pond Bay for it's great snorkeling and Maho Bay. Hiking Rams Head Trail in the early morning was an unforgettable experience as well as kayaking from Cruz Bay. St. John is a peaceful and beautiful Island to stay on. The locals are friendly, inviting and helpful. The local guide the owners had to meet us at the ferry dock was such a great welcome to the island. This was our first visit and we can't wait to coming back.
My husband and I have traveled the Caribbean and parts of Mexico extensively and were absolutely head over heels in love with this one of a kind oasis. It seems that every small detail of Anchorage Aweigh was carefully and thoughtfully designed.
Whether lounging on a raft or chair by the pool or relaxing on the wraparound deck we were surrounded by beauty. The views of the harbor and church below were breathtaking. The kitchen was so well appointed we were able to enjoy many meals in. They even had a grill we used several times for steaks. We ate by candlelight on the deck.
The pool was perfectly cleaned, well maintained and completely private. The outdoor shower was like something out of a romantic novel with a window to the sea and a gorgeous ceiling of stars.
The bed was very comfortable as well. Here are some of the "little extras" that made our stay a truly unforgettable experience: Backpack Beach Chairs, Binoculars, IPod Dock and CD player, Snorkel Masks, Coolers, Abundance of Beach Towels, WiFi and Satellite TV.
We could not have been more happy with our stay at anchorage aweigh. It is a short drive up Sea Grape Hill, which is a fun hill to drive. Look the video up on Google! Marc met us at the villa and gave us a quick rundown of information. The minute we walked in we knew we had made a great choice. The villa was fresh and clean. Everything about it was perfect, the view, the pool, the location. The owners have thought of everything you could every need. The ipod dock was great to listen to our music while sitting on the deck taking in the view, they have a complete kitchen and all the utensils that you will need to fix dinners there, as the restaurants get quite expensive eating out every night. Coral Bay is the quieter side of the island, and that is just what we wanted. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from in Coral Bay. We brought hot cereals and some bagels with us to have for breakfast at the villa. Then we would head out to one of the beautiful beaches or a hike that are a short drive from the villa. After a morning/early afternoon at the beach, we came back to the villa for a shower and to relax in the pool and then out to dinner. The outdoor shower is lovely...either taking a shower during the heat of the day or under the stars. The only person I would caution is someone that has problems with stairs, as there is a steep spiral staircase that you have to go up and down to get to the bedroom. We loved it, but someone that has a problem with stairs may not. Otherwise, this villa is awesome!
We read so many great reviews about this rental, including the owner's blog about its construction, we decided to spend our 20-years-late-honeymoon in St. John. The villa is everything that you might read; beautiful, quiet, semi-secluded, well-appointed and convenient, comfortable. Mark, the property manager, was helpful and in touch with us via email before our arrival. He met us at the ferry when we arrived and had our rental car waiting for us. The entire trip couldn't have been easier. Little touches like beach chairs, coolers, and beach towels made our trip packing a lot easier and our stay even more convenient. The road and driveway are steep but after a couple of times up and down you get used to it. We were enchanted with the sights and sounds from the villa; children playing in the schoolyard, the church bells and singing on Sunday, wild donkeys and chickens, a chorus of insects humming at night, the amazing view of the bay. The pool was clean and we enjoyed it every day. I couldn't say enough about the whole experience. I hope we can return!
We had a wonderful time celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary at anchorage aweigh. The house was so welcoming and decorated very nice.
We enjoyed the swimming pool, outdoor shower, porch views as well as all the other amenities included. The cooler and beach chairs came in very handy to take along to the beaches.
The owners provided someone to meet us at the ferry, take us to get our rental car, buy groceries, and to the house.
Skinny Legs and aqua Bistro were our favorite restaurants. The prices were very reasonable and the food was good. Chauteau Bordeaux is a must for lunch and has awesome views of St John and other neighboring islands.
There are plenty of fantastic beaches within a short driving distance. St. John is a peaceful and beautiful Island to stay on. This was our first visit and we will definitely be coming back.
My husband and I stayed at anchorage aweigh again in august and it did not disappoint. We stayed there last summer and enjoyed our stay so much that we felt like there was no other place we wanted to stay on our return visit to paradise! The cottage is perfect for two people who want privacy, a convenient location, easy access, as well as comfortable and clean surroundings. The air conditioned bedroom is on the lower level accessed by a spiral staircase. We absolutely love the saline pool! It is the perfect way to begin your day and/or end your day. Nothing like coming "home” from being on the beach all day, fixing your beverage of choice, and floating in the pool! The landscaping around the pool is lovely. The owners have planted palm trees and added an umbrella to provide shade if you want to lounge around the pool during the day. The kitchen is well stocked with all cooking essentials including a refrigerator with an ice maker. We loved beginning our day on the covered porch with our coffee watching the sugar birds and looking at the beautiful Coral Bay harbor and hillside. We feel that anchorage aweigh is an exceptional value for all the amenities that are provided its guest and we hope to return for another visit.
We found beautiful snorkeling beaches to meet the needs of the beginner or the advanced swimmers.
We spent time on the wrap a round deck for shade and relaxation any time of day. The kitchen is well equipped for dining in or availability of dining out provides a variety of choices.
We enjoyed the birds and wildlife seen everywhere on the island and most of it within sight from the villa deck.
The pool was great way to begin and end the day or anytime in between.
The views from the villa and pool were exceptional. We were able to watch a storm come across the harbor and see the boats turn in synchronized dance with the change of tide.
Anchorage aweigh was a perfect little slice of St. John. With stunning views the owners provide a bit of luxury along with all the comforts of home. It was an ideal romantic setting.
Evenings in the private pool were enchanting with the bright Caribbean sky above us. The outdoor shower is amazing. The outdoor living space and privacy is extraordinary. I love that the villa provides beach chairs, beach towels and coolers (two sizes). The internet connection was a bit flaky, but a quick reset easily fixed the problem.
Easy access to Skinny Legs, The Donkey Dinner, Shipwreck Landing and The Bistro provided plenty of dining options in Coral Bay. Quick beach access at Maho, but Salt Pond is absolutely worth the short hike.
Don't be intimidated by the drive up Seagrape Hill nor the driveway: Scary at first, but easy going after the first run.
The highlights for us were the views, pool and outdoor shower. Definitely would stay at anchorage aweigh again!
We just got back from our St. John Usvi vacation and staying at anchorage aweigh was the best decision. While the winding road up to the villa takes some getting used to, it is worth it for the views alone. The house has everything you need: kitchen essentials, wi-fi, cd-mp3 surround sound, swimming pool, etc. They've thought of everything including beach chairs and cooler for your days at the beach. There are great restaurants down the hill and across the bay so no need to cook if you don't want to. We spent about 10 days of "island time" and were sad to leave such a beautiful home and a piece of paradise. Thanks for sharing!
Anchorage aweigh is a fantastic spot for any couple. The location of the house is on the quieter side of St. John, it has a fantastic view of Coral Bay, and provides a great space for 2 people to spend a romantic week together. The house is a 2 story, stacked on the side of a mountain with wrap around balconies on each level. There is a pool and deck area overlooking Coral Bay situated between the 1st and 2nd level of the home. The bottom floor bedroom is air conditioned, which is nice for sleeping. The upper level main living area has plenty of windows to condition the space nicely. There is always a breeze and the temperatures aren't too warm. We loved the full kitchen, stereo with Ipod dock, outdoor dining area, couch, and porch swing. You are definitely in a private area in this home, but you're only minutes away from the restuarants of Coral Bay and St. John's many beaches and National Park area. The owners made it very easy to secure the rental, and their local agent guided us to the home upon our arrival, which was a huge plus. We absolutely loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone.
We were St. John first timers and did we make the right decision. St. John was the perfect island, Coral Bay was the perfect town, and aA was the perfect villa for what quickly became our second honeymoon, which was even more memorable than the first. A lot of the credit for that goes to aA. It was the first villa we clicked on in Vrbo when we began our search. The most important part of the search results was the title for aA which said "Private Romantic Setting”. It could not have been more appropriate. We did some comparison shopping and while some villas were close, nothing else matched the combination of amenities, location, price and reviews.
Our villa favorites: The swing - we sat on it for morning coffee, afternoon and evening rum drinks; the pool; the privacy of the villa and pool. Other things we loved in no particular order: The view of Coral Bay, listening to the bands play at Skinny's and Island Blues down in town, watching the goats and donkeys feed on the school field, feeding the hummingbirds, banana quits and other birds, watching the geckos everywhere, hearing the kids get off the school bus in the morning and having fun instantly, eating our meals at the villa all outside, the entire villa setup and feeling we had when there.
If you're looking for a place to be as relaxed and connected as we felt for our 8 night stay, then this is the villa. It's close to town and the beaches in each direction yet had enough of that secluded feel. We enjoyed a different beach everyday and ate out some of our meals, but always felt totally at home coming back to aA for a dip in the pool and maybe eating dinner in at night. The kitchen, bathrooms, shower and bedroom all perfectly met our needs. We didn't even turn the TV on after the 3rd day since we were enjoying each other, the villa and the island so much. Our e-mails to Pat & Scott and Marc Miller (Manager) were all answered promptly and with all the information we needed for our stay.
Everything you read on the website is true. We had a wonderfull stay, the spot is perfect when you like to go to the different beaches for snorkling or hiking the trails.
Loved the sunsets from the porch, can't beat the view from the pool and it's on our return list.
The villa and location are as lovely as described. We loved staying in Coral Bay. The manager (Marc) met us in Cruz Bay and we followed him to the property in the dark. The driving on St John and the driveway of this villa are as scarey as described. It didn't stop us from driving all over the island, however, and there are many many beaches to snorkel. The villa has beach towels, beach chairs, and a cooler to take along - which was very nice to have! There is also a washer and dryer to make packing easier! The no seeums were a bother several of the nights while we were there, but we did have a couple nights where we could enjoy the view and sounds of the town sitting out on the very beautiful veranda! The outdoor shower was also a Caribbean treat, but it would have been nice to know that the hot is cold and vice versa. The kitchen is outfitted so eating in is as pleasant as dining out! We enjoyed Shipwreck Landing, Skinny Legs, and Island Blues right in Coral Bay. Very comfortable, lovely place to stay!
